Safeguarding Inquiry After Zoo Incident

Tuesday, 7 July 2026 09:43

A safeguarding inquiry has been launched after a three-year-old boy was seriously injured at a Cambridgeshire zoo.

A safeguarding inquiry has been launched following an incident in which a three-year-old boy was allegedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure at a zoo near Cambridge.

The child suffered serious injuries at Johnsons of Old Hurst, near Huntingdon, on June 18th. He remains in hospital in a stable condition and is expected to need a lengthy period of recovery.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident. Police have said the man was not known to the child. He has since been released on bail while inquiries continue.

It is understood the suspect has learning difficulties and had been visiting the zoo as part of a trip with carers.

Norfolk County Council has now confirmed it is carrying out a safeguarding investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s care.

The inquiry will look at whether appropriate support and supervision were in place at the time of the incident.

Zoo staff have been praised for their quick actions in rescuing the child from the enclosure and helping emergency services at the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, and the child’s family is being supported.
