Plans to modernise Norwich Theatre Playhouse, including a larger bar and upgraded backstage facilities, have been given the go-ahead.
Plans to refurbish Norwich Theatre Playhouse have been approved, paving the way for a major investment in one of the city's best-known performance venues.
Norwich City Council has given the go-ahead for the scheme, which includes doubling the size of the theatre's bar, improving public areas and upgrading backstage facilities used by performers and staff.
The project aims to modernise the theatre while preserving its character, creating a better experience for audiences and visiting productions alike.
During the planning process, some nearby residents raised concerns that a larger bar could lead to increased noise and disturbance, particularly after evening performances. However, councillors concluded that the benefits of the redevelopment outweighed the concerns, with planning conditions in place to help minimise any potential impact on neighbours.
The improvements will also include enhancements to dressing rooms, technical areas and other behind-the-scenes facilities, helping the Playhouse continue to attract touring productions and support local performances.
Norwich Theatre says the investment is part of its long-term strategy to secure the future of the venue and improve accessibility and visitor experience.
Construction is not expected to begin until 2028, allowing time for detailed design work, funding arrangements and planning ahead of the major refurbishment.
