Plans to replace Norwich’s Nelson Premier Inn with a larger hotel, student rooms and homes have been approved by councillors.
Plans to demolish and redevelop the Norwich Nelson Premier Inn site near the city’s railway station have been approved.
The development will replace the existing hotel, Table Table restaurant and surrounding commercial buildings on Prince of Wales Road.
Proposals include a new 248-bedroom Premier Inn, approximately 491 purpose-built student rooms and accommodation for around 75 residents. The project will be constructed in phases, allowing the hotel operator to maintain a presence in the city during the work.
The wider scheme also features new commercial units, landscaped public spaces, a public plaza and improvements to the riverside walkway beside the River Wensum.
Whitbread, which owns Premier Inn, says the existing hotel was built in 1971 and is dated, inefficient and in need of significant investment. Several nearby commercial and office units are also vacant.
Supporters say redeveloping the prominent site will create a more welcoming gateway for passengers arriving at Norwich railway station while providing additional hotel, student and residential accommodation.
The project’s designers say the layout will improve pedestrian links between Prince of Wales Road, Mountergate and the river, while opening up views towards Norwich’s historic centre.
Further details about the construction timetable are expected as the development progresses.
