King’s Lynn Night Shelter has closed until October after funding pressures made year-round operation unaffordable for the Norfolk homelessness charity.
King’s Lynn Night Shelter has temporarily closed because it does not have enough funding to continue operating throughout the year.
The charity, based at St John’s Vicarage on Blackfriars Road, closed at the beginning of July and expects to reopen in October for the winter season.
Running the shelter costs approximately £27,000 each month. It receives no regular national or local government funding and relies on grants, charitable donations and fundraising within the community.
Staff said the shelter was full when it closed. Those staying there were supported in finding alternative accommodation, although the charity acknowledged that some could be left without anywhere else to go.
The closure is particularly concerning during the current spell of hot weather. People sleeping rough can struggle to access drinking water, showers, clean clothing and safe places offering shade from high temperatures.
The shelter provides accommodation alongside meals, washing facilities and practical support to help guests move towards more permanent housing.
Unused food was donated to King’s Lynn Foodbank following the closure, while volunteers were thanked for their continued support.
The charity will spend the summer fundraising in the hope of reopening as planned and securing the longer-term future of its services.
