Great Yarmouth has reached the final 15 towns competing to become the UK's first-ever Town of Culture.
Great Yarmouth has taken a major step towards becoming the UK's first-ever Town of Culture after being named among the final 15 places still in the running.
The shortlist, announced by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, includes towns from across England, Scotland and Wales. Great Yarmouth is one of five medium-sized towns to progress to the next stage of the competition.
The town will now receive £60,000 to help prepare a detailed final bid, showcasing its cultural heritage, creative ambitions and plans to involve the local community.
Three finalists – one small, one medium and one large town – will be chosen early next year. An overall winner will then be crowned the UK's first Town of Culture 2028, receiving £3 million to deliver a major programme of cultural events and activities. The two runners-up will each receive £250,000 to develop parts of their proposals.
The competition aims to celebrate towns with strong local identities and use culture to boost tourism, community pride and economic growth. If successful, Great Yarmouth would become the first town to hold the prestigious new title, bringing national recognition and significant investment to the resort.
