Electrical Recycling Restarts Across Norfolk

Friday, 10 July 2026 20:13

Norfolk recycling centres will again accept electrical items and batteries after new collection and treatment arrangements were agreed by the council.

Norfolk’s recycling centres will resume accepting all electrical items and batteries from Monday 13 July.

Collections were temporarily restricted after a major fire in April at commercial premises on Brunel Way in Thetford, used by Norfolk County Council’s previous electrical waste contractor.

The fire reduced the available capacity for safely sorting and treating electrical waste. Although some larger appliances were later accepted again, residents could not take items including fridges, freezers, microwaves, mobile phones, batteries, light bulbs and smaller electrical products to the county’s recycling centres.

Norfolk County Council has now joined a new producer compliance scheme operated by Recycling Lives. The organisation has arranged for Rackheath-based Shred Station to collect and process waste electrical and electronic equipment from the sites.

The new arrangements mean all electrical products can once again be accepted at every Norfolk recycling centre, including batteries, fluorescent tubes and light bulbs.

The council has thanked residents for safely storing unwanted items and for their patience while replacement arrangements were established.

Residents are reminded that electrical goods and batteries should never be placed in household rubbish or recycling bins because they can create a serious fire risk.

Visits to Norfolk’s recycling centres must be booked in advance, free of charge, through the county council’s website.
