Council Denies New Pride Restrictions

Friday, 10 July 2026 20:15

Norfolk County Council says no new Pride restrictions have been introduced in libraries or museums, despite recent reports claiming otherwise.

Norfolk County Council has denied reports that new restrictions have been imposed on Pride activities within the county’s libraries and museums.

The authority says no new decision has been made and no fresh guidance has been issued preventing Pride displays, exhibitions or events. It says existing guidance on political neutrality has been in place since 2024, before the current Reform UK administration took control of the council.

The policy applies to all political parties, campaigns and organisations rather than singling out Pride or LGBTQ+ groups.

Council officials say libraries and museums should continue taking part in community activities and recognising significant events. However, displays and exhibitions should be presented with appropriate context and, where subjects could be considered controversial or political, include a suitable range of information and viewpoints.

The clarification follows reports suggesting Pride-themed displays and events had been banned across Norfolk’s library network.

The council says LGBTQ+ books and other materials remain available to borrow and that its venues should continue serving all sections of the community.

It added that political neutrality does not mean avoiding important subjects, but ensuring publicly funded spaces provide balanced information and remain welcoming to residents with a wide range of opinions and experiences.
