Ageing swing bridges and hot weather are causing disruption for boaters navigating the Norfolk Broads during the busy summer season.
Boaters on the Norfolk Broads are experiencing delays and disruption after problems with several ageing swing bridges affected navigation during one of the busiest times of the year.
One of the main issues is at Reedham Swing Bridge, which is currently unable to open because of a mechanical fault. The problem has left some larger vessels unable to pass through, with boats that rely on the bridge opening temporarily stranded on either side of the crossing.
Network Rail, which operates the bridge, has apologised for the disruption and says engineers are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum during the peak summer boating season.
The warm weather has also created additional challenges for some of the Broads' other swing bridges. High temperatures can cause metal components to expand, making bridges more difficult to operate and occasionally leading to temporary delays while safety checks are carried out.
Thousands of visitors head to the Norfolk Broads each summer, with many hiring cruisers or exploring the waterways in private boats. Reliable bridge operations are essential for allowing larger vessels to move freely between different parts of the network.
Network Rail says it appreciates the patience of boaters and will continue working to minimise disruption while repairs and maintenance are carried out.
