Man Arrested After Hopton Police Standoff

Friday, 6 November 2026 at 08:42

A man has been arrested after a lengthy police incident in Hopton that prompted evacuations and closure of Coast Road.

A man has been arrested following a major police incident in Hopton-on-Sea which lasted more than 24 hours and resulted in the evacuation of nearby homes and a primary school.

Norfolk Police were called to a property on Coast Road at approximately 11.30am on Wednesday 4 November after reports that a man had made threats during attempts to evict him.

Officers say the man locked himself inside the property and threatened to set fire to containers of petrol if anyone entered.

Specialist police negotiators, drone teams and other emergency services were deployed to the scene as officers worked to resolve the situation safely.

Several neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution, along with Hopton Church of England Primary Academy, which remained closed on Thursday.

The incident finally ended at approximately 2pm on Thursday 5 November when the man, aged in his forties, was arrested.

He was detained on suspicion of communicating false information relating to an alleged bomb hoax.

Coast Road has since reopened to traffic, although a police cordon remained around the property following the arrest.

Most residents have been allowed to return home, but two households were still displaced following the latest police update.

Norfolk Police thanked the local community for its patience and cooperation throughout the incident.
