Norfolk County Council is facing calls to bring back a highways fund used for small local road improvements.
Norfolk County Council is facing calls to reverse its decision to scrap a local highways fund used for small road improvement projects.
The Highways Local Members Fund gave each of Norfolk’s 84 county councillors £11,000 a year to spend on schemes in their divisions.
Since being introduced in 2017, the money has been used for projects such as pedestrian crossings, speed signs, bus shelters, road safety measures and other small-scale improvements requested by local communities.
Critics of the decision say removing the fund is short-sighted and could make it harder for councillors to respond to local concerns quickly.
However, council leader David Bick says pooling the money will allow the authority to focus on bigger highways priorities, including potholes and resurfacing.
The county council has also recently deployed new pothole repair crews as part of its wider work to improve road conditions across Norfolk.
Supporters of the change argue that using the funding centrally could deliver better value for money and help tackle larger maintenance issues.
The council says it remains committed to investing in Norfolk’s roads, while opponents are urging it to reconsider and protect funding for smaller local schemes.
