Christmas Shopping & Parking 2026

Christmas shopping doesn't have to mean sitting in traffic or rushing around before the shops close.

Across Norfolk and North Suffolk there will be late-night shopping evenings, Christmas events and special parking arrangements throughout November and December.

We've started bringing the key information together — and we'll update this guide as councils, shopping centres and bus operators confirm their final Christmas arrangements.

Norwich Late-Night Shopping

Norwich city centre will have several opportunities for evening Christmas shopping.

On Thursday 19 November, selected Chantry Place stores stay open until 7pm to coincide with the Norwich Christmas lights switch-on.

The centre then holds dedicated late-night Christmas shopping evenings on Thursday 10 and Thursday 17 December, when stores stay open until 8pm.

Shops will also remain open until 7pm on 21, 22 and 23 December.

Individual stores elsewhere in Norwich may operate different hours, so it is worth checking before making a special journey.

Norwich Park & Ride

For busy Christmas shopping days, Norwich Park & Ride can be one of the easiest ways into the centre.

Five sites currently serve Norwich city centre:

Airport – useful if you're approaching from north Norwich and the A140 direction.

Sprowston – useful from the Broads and north-east Norfolk.

Postwick – particularly useful from Great Yarmouth, the A47 and east Norfolk.

Harford – south of Norwich.

Thickthorn – useful from the A11 and south-west of Norwich.

Parking at the sites is free when using the bus.

Current Park & Ride fares include £3 for an adult, while Norfolk County Council is also promoting an all-day ticket for groups of up to five people for £5.

Services run into the city throughout the week, including Sundays, although last buses vary considerably between sites — particularly important if you're planning late-night shopping. Check your return service before heading into the city.

Parking in Norwich

There are numerous city-centre options if you'd rather drive all the way in.

Major multi-storeys include Chantry Place, Castle Quarter, St Andrews, The Forum, St Giles, Rose Lane and John Lewis, alongside surface car parks around the city.

Chantry Place alone has around 1,000 parking spaces.

The Norwich Christmas lights switch-on on 19 November will bring several temporary city-centre road closures, including restrictions around St Peters Street, Bethel Street, Gaol Hill, Guildhall Hill, Gentleman's Walk and Exchange Street, so Park & Ride or public transport may be particularly useful that evening.

Great Yarmouth – Late Shopping and Free Parking

Great Yarmouth has already confirmed a particularly useful Christmas parking offer.

On Friday 20 November, many town-centre shops will stay open until 8pm for the Christmas lights switch-on and Christmas Fayre.

Free parking will be available in selected council-run town-centre car parks from 4pm on the Friday, with free all-day parking in selected car parks on Saturdays and Sundays during the Christmas period.

The festive free-parking promotion is scheduled to continue on weekends through to 27 December.

Beccles

Beccles combines its Christmas light switch-on with late-night shopping on Friday 27 November.

The event runs from around 5pm and includes craft stalls, food, entertainment and Santa's Grotto alongside local shops opening into the evening.

For parking, East Suffolk Council operates the town-centre car parks at Hungate, Newgate and Blyburgate, where normal charges currently apply between 8am and 6pm.

There is also free public parking at Puddingmoor, while Tesco offers up to three hours of free parking for customers.

Lowestoft

Lowestoft's main Christmas light switch-on takes place on Saturday 28 November, providing one of the first major festive shopping days in the town centre.

London Road North has a mixture of national retailers and independent businesses, with a growing Christmas programme planned around the town.

Further late-night shopping and Christmas parking arrangements for Lowestoft are still being confirmed, and we'll add them here as soon as details are announced.

Our Christmas Parking Advice

December weekends are likely to be particularly busy, especially in Norwich and around major Christmas events.

If you're heading into Norwich for a full day, Park & Ride is well worth considering. If you're attending a specific event, check road closures before leaving home and don't assume your usual car park will be accessible.

For late-night shopping, always check the final bus back to your Park & Ride site before heading into the city, as services don't all finish at the same time.

We'll keep this page updated throughout November and December with extra late-night shopping dates, free-parking offers, Park & Ride changes and special Christmas transport arrangements as they're announced.
