Norwich City booked their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win away to Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night.
Liam Manning made a number of changes to the side that were beaten by Millwall in the Sky Bet Championship opener, with competitive debuts for Daniel Grimshaw and Papa Amadou Diallo.
And it would be Grimshaw who was the first goalkeeper called into action, getting down well at his near post to push away an effort from Nestory Irankunda.
It would be the influence of the other Norwich debutant that lead to the opening goal. Diallo's ball across goal was tapped home by Josh Sargent.
The Canaries went on to double their advantage not long after. Marcelino Núñez had a go from range and his effort squeezed through Egil Selvik's hands and into the back of the net.
Núñez nearly added his second and Norwich's third of the evening just before the half-hour mark, as the Chilean lined up another shot from distance. Selvik pushed this one away, however.
Diallo continued to be a threat on the left-hand side and came within inches of marking his debut with a goal, but saw his shot hit the side-netting.
Harry Darling rose highest from a Núñez corner, but his header was wide of the Watford goal as the Canaries went into the break two goals ahead.
In the second half, a nice passage of play was nearly rewarded with a third Norwich goal as Sargent curled an effort just wide of the post.
Watford did pull a goal back as substitute Kwadwo Baah finished beyond Grimshaw.
Irankunda nearly levelled the game with just over five minutes remaining, but the Australian's shot was wide of the post.
Despite the late pressure from the home side, Norwich would hold on and move into the next round of the competition.
