Norwich City exited the 2025/26 Carabao Cup in the second round after a 3-0 defeat at home to Southampton at Carrow Road.
Liam Manning made nine changes to the side that were beaten by Middlesbrough at the weekend, with Mathias Kvistgaarden, Ruairi McConville, Liam Gibbs and Matěj Jurásek all making their first starts of the season.
Mirko Topić was behind the first chance of the game, winning the ball high up the pitch and seeing a deflected effort hit the crossbar.
Alex McCarthy was then called into action to push away a Jeffrey Schlupp cross that was diverted towards goal by Saints defender Nathan Wood.
Kvistgaarden nearly opened his account for the Canaries, steaming into the Southampton area but saw his shot parried away by McCarthy.
A free-kick from Jurásek had McCarthy back in action, helping the set-piece over the bar.
The Czech international caused more problems for the Southampton defence and came close to the opener, with McCarthy again denying his curled effort.
Harry Darling got in the way of a Cameron Archer effort, as the away side looked to open the scoring.
But three minutes before the break, Southampton were in front. Archer found the top corner in brilliant fashion with a curled effort.
The Canaries almost found a leveller five minutes into the second half, as Schlupp struck a volley but McCarthy was at full stretch to deny the effort once again.
And just after the hour mark, Southampton had doubled their lead. Ryan Fraser got on the end of a ball forward and finished beyond Daniel Grimshaw for two.
Substitutes Ante Crnac and Jovon Makama combined well on the edge of the Southampton area, but the Croatian's eventual shot was wide of the post.
But the away side made it three in emphatic fashion as Kuryu Matsuki found the top corner from long range, meaning Norwich were knocked out of the Carabao Cup.
